Is CBD a medicine?

Of the more than 500 components that hemp possesses, the most important is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), belonging to the cannabinoid group. CBD has no psychotropic effects (the WHO has classified it as safe and non-addictive), unlike THC, and offers a wide variety of beneficial properties for health, which is why there has been a real boom in the consumption of this compound in recent years.

From Naturumicbd we tell you the reality of this compound if CBD is medicine, its benefits, and its use in health issues.

Is CBD a medicine?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical, belonging to the cannabinoid group, found in hemp. CBD acts on the central nervous system and is therefore psychoactive, but does not have the psychotropic effects of THC. This compound acts indirectly on the endocannabinoid system of the human body which governs different aspects of physical and mental function.

There are many experts today who study and affirm the benefits of CBD in the treatment of different pathologies such as neurodegenerative diseases or rheumatoid arthritis, but there is still a lot of ignorance about this molecule at the therapeutic and medicinal levels. For this reason, there is still no consensus in the scientific and health community on the legality of the use of this component, which means that depending on the country where we are, it can be used in one way or another.

In Spain, CBD has not yet been registered as a food supplement in the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) and industrial hemp can only be used legally as a cosmetic product for external use. The only CBD product approved by the Food and Drug Administration is a prescription oil called Epidiolex that is indicated to treat some types of epilepsy. However, in the United States, the government has obtained a patent on CBD for medical use.

The most typical form of commercialization is in oil, which is extracted in concentrated form from the hemp plant. But CBD can also be sold as an extract, a vaporized liquid, or an oil-based capsule.

THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES OF CBD

As we have already mentioned before, there is still much to be discovered about whether CBD can act as a medicine, but according to several studies it is known for its antiemetic, antipsychotic, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, tumor-inhibiting, anxiolytic, and antidepressant properties. Its usefulness in different treatments for epilepsy has been scientifically confirmed and therefore it has an accepted medical use.

Among the different therapeutic uses of CBD we find:

  • As a medicine for epilepsy.
  • It can replace opiates in the treatment of chronic pain.
  • Treatment of depression and anxiety due to its direct action on the serotonin receptor 5HT1A.
  • Helps in neurodegenerative disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and stroke.
  • Helps to fall asleep
  • Serves as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory and helps with joint pain, rheumatism, arthritis, osteoarthritis, back pain, lumbago, cervical, sciatica.
  • Reduces itching caused by psoriasis, eczema or acne and reduces inflammation.

CBD is often used to complement traditional treatments, not as a direct medicine. Its therapeutic benefits can be taken into account in order to improve quality of life, especially in patients suffering from chronic diseases, but it should always be used with the supervision of your doctor as you have to be careful with potential interactions with other medicines.

RECOMMENDATIONS BEFORE USING A CBD PRODUCT

With the increase of research on CBD and, consequently, the high demand for products based on this compound, the market has not stopped growing with the sale of these products. However, care must be taken when purchasing and using a CBD product as they are produced sustainably, honestly or with the consumer’s best interests in mind.

The product should describe the exact concentration of CBD, describe the method of preparation used and include instructions for use and specify normal and maximum dosages.

CBD is increasingly legitimized by the medical community and some medical professionals have even begun to implement CBD treatment with their patients. There is still much to be discovered about CBD as a medicine, but it is clear that it has many beneficial properties for health.
